The probationary period is three months – and it goes both ways. Therefore, we have the possibility to dismiss an employee within the probationary period with 14 days' notice at any time (not only by the end of a month). In the same way, the employee may also resign without notice during the probationary period.
When the relationship between workplace and employee does not work, it can have both personal, professional and financial consequences. A probationary period gives both parties a good opportunity to find out if the match is right.
No rules without exceptions
The basic principle is that all Academic staff have a probationary period (at least) once. The following applies:
- Probationary period is always used in the educational positions – PhD fellow, Assistant Professor/researcher and Teaching Assistant professor.
- Probationary period is not used when an employee at AAU changes employment from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor, or from Associate Professor to Professor.
- When hiring an academic employee, who is hired after an ‘interrupted employment’ (former employee at AAU), a probationary period is used.
Therefore, the probationary period is always used for employees, who come from outside of AAU, regardless of position.
Probationary period is not used, when hiring Associate Professors and Professors, who come directly from another position at AAU.
For those of you who are involved in the process of hiring new employees, we have created a page here on MP intra, which explains it all in detail. On this page you can also find a guide to how you can approach the probationary period in practice:
