What is ‘Incidents with violence’.
‘Incidents with violence’ are acts in which one or more perpetrators practice violence or threaten to practice violence against others.
What to do if you are witnessing violent or abusive actions:
- Stay calm for as long as possible
- Call for help, but do not intervene physically
- Try to descale the conflict verbally
- Contact the immediate head/coordinator as soon as possible
- By suspicion of premeditated violence: follow the instruction for warning. Keep focus on ensuring safety.
Call for help by nearby colleagues if it is obviously that the perpetrator’s actions are linked to him/her loosing control. Then try descaling the situation verbally and through your behavior to sway the perpetrator to stop the actions by himself/herself. Consider involving the police from the perspective of duration and gravity of the actions.
Violence, threats of violence and other offending behavior must be handled and reported as an accident at work. Depending on circumstances, it must be considered to report the matter to the police - including situations where it succeeds to avert the incident without involving the authority.
Likewise, victims and persons who have been subjects to acts of violence should be offered psychological assistance. The decision is taken by the head/coordinator present.
